2012 WASH Project

BARKA Foundation is in the midst of a fundraising campaign to complete project funding for the implementation of a water, sanitation & hygiene (WASH) project to do the following:

  • ESTABLISH A LOCAL, SELF-DETERMINED WATER & SANITATION BOARD IN TANTIAKA
  • DRILL 1 WELL
  • FIX 1 WELL
  • CONSTRUCT GENDER-SPECIFIC COMPOSTING TOILETS FOR VILLAGE USE
  • BEGIN A HYGIENE EDUCATION PROGRAM AT THE LOCAL SCHOOL

TOTAL PROJECT BUDGET: US $50,000 CURRENT FUNDRAISING TOTAL: $25,000 (collected from donations made by hundreds of individuals, students who “walked for water” in their communities, and online grassroots campaigns) This project is the first step in a long-term initiative with the village of Tantiaka to break the cycle of poverty.  We begin with water because in 2008 BARKA met with women of the village and were given their “Free, Prior & Informed Consent” to collaborate on this venture.  When we asked simply where to begin, they discussed it among themselves and said unanimously: CLEAN WATER. Through its affiliation with the United Nations, BARKA knew that a water project must also take into account sanitation improvements and hygiene education to yield sustainable impact.  Help us take this first decisive step in the co-creation of a holistic, replicable village micro-model to achieve the UN’s Millennium Development Goals and create sustainable empowerment and prosperity. Here’s how you can help:
